Stud Ewes

  • Physical Stature: They are medium-to-large, agile animals with a graceful build. A mature stud doe should stand at least 30 inches (76 cm) tall at the withers and weigh no less than 135 lbs (61 kg).

  • Dairy Conformation: Selection focuses on a “triple wedge” shape—refined at the head and neck, widening toward the barrel and hindquarters to support high feed intake and milk production.

  • Udder Quality: This is a critical “stud” trait. The udder must be large, well-attached (high and wide in the back), and soft in texture. Teats should be well-formed, symmetrical, and parallel for ease of milking.

  • Appearance: They have erect, alert ears and a straight or slightly dished facial profile. Their coats are short-to-medium and can come in any color combination, though specific patterns like Cou Blanc (white neck) or Chamoisée (brown with black markings) are common.

Stud Buck

Physical Characteristics
  • Size and Build: Mature bucks are medium-to-large animals with a strong, “alertly graceful” build. They are significantly larger than females, standing at least 32–34 inches (81–86 cm) at the withers and weighing at least 170 lbs (77 kg).

  • Head and Profile: They have a straight facial profile and medium-sized erect ears that point forward.

  • Coat and Features: Bucks typically have a short to medium-length coat. They are distinguished from females by a more pronounced beard and a “roach” or fringe of long hair along the spine.

  • Horns: They often have tall, slightly curved horns, though they may be disbudded (removed) for safety in many managed herds.

Coloration and Patterns

Alpines are the only dairy breed with erect ears that appear in almost any color or combination. Common recognized patterns include:

  • Cou Clair: Tan, cream, or gray front quarters with black hindquarters.

  • Cou Noir: Black front quarters and white hindquarters.

  • Chamoisee: Brown or bay with black markings (the male spelling is specifically Chamoise).

  • Sundgau: Black with white markings on the face and legs
